As we grow older, most of us want to remain in our own homes, comforted by familiar surroundings. But taking care of a home — mowing the yard, doing the housework, even changing a light bulb — can be a daunting task for older people who may lack the mobility and strength to do the things that home ownership requires. Good neighbors can make all the difference.
What can Neighborhood Connection do?
Neighborhood Connection matches volunteers with older people who need assistance with the tasks of daily living. This assistance may include:
- Minor Home Repairs: painting, replacing light bulbs
- Outside Maintenance: yard mowing, snow shoveling, raking, cleaning gutters
- Telephone Outreach: telephone calls to ensure the resident’s well being and to combat isolation
Volunteers do not give baths, dispense medication, undertake major housecleaning or perform major household repairs like plumbing or electrical work. People needing services such as these should call our Information/Assistance - Aging office at 316-267-0122 for referrals to appropriate agencies.
Who is eligible?
People age 60 and over are eligible if they are not eligible for assistance through other programs, cannot pay for the service and do not have friends or relatives to perform household tasks for them. A Senior Services Social Service Specialist will conduct a home assessment to determine need, then service will commence as soon as a volunteer is available.
Who pays for Neighborhood Connection?
There is no charge for Neighborhood Connection services. The program is partially funded by Sedgwick County and United Way of the Plains, but it relies on private donations for a considerable portion of its operating budget. To donate, please click on HOW TO HELP.
Are volunteers screened?
Yes, every volunteer fills out an application and provides two references that are checked before the volunteer is assigned to a client.
