| Caring
for a homebound, elderly loved one can be stressful, frustrating, and
physically and emotionally taxing. In-Home Respite Care provides trained
workers to come into the home to take care of elderly dependents so that
primary caregivers can have time for themselves. Such periods of respite
give caregivers the opportunity to carve out some time to rest, attend
to other responsibilities, or to do the things they like to do, knowing
that loved ones are still being cared for. In-Home Respite Care staff
recognize that all of us need a life that is at least partly our own,
and they assist caregivers and their families to reduce the strain of
caregiving, and to help elderly people remain at home and avoid institutionalization.
Who is eligible?
Applicants must live in Sedgwick County and be responsible
for 24-hour care for a dependent aged 60 or older. No one will be denied
service based on the ability or inability to pay.
How do I apply for Respite Care?
Anyone can request In-Home Respite Care by calling 316-267-1771.
After the request is made, Senior Services, Inc. staff will perform a
home assessment to determine eligibility. We also accept referrals from
all social service agencies that do home assessments.
Upon acceptance, caregivers will receive respite in three-hour
blocks, preferably scheduled weekly. Irregularly scheduled respite care
is also available, but in such cases, Senior Services cannot guarantee
service at a particular time. We prefer to schedule care on weekdays,
but we will provide care in the evenings and on weekends whenever possible.
Who
provides Respite Care?
All workers are paid employees of Senior Services, Inc.
They receive a 28-hour training program to ensure that each worker is
fully familiar with care and safety issues. Senior Services staff screens
all workers and checks all references prior to assigning them to respite
care.
Who pays for Respite Care?
There is no fee for In-Home Respite Care, and no one is
denied service based on ability or inability to pay. We provide a sliding
scale for suggested contributions based on income. The program is partially
funded by the Federal Older Americans Act and United Way of the Plains.
