Hundreds of volunteers give their time each month to deliver a meal, mow
a yard, assist at a senior center or contribute in countless other ways
to help Senior Services, Inc. fulfill its mission to the older people
of our community. You can join that dedicated group and help as often
and in any way that you can.
Meals on Wheels Volunteers
What do Meals on Wheels volunteers do?
Volunteers deliver hot, noon meals to homebound older people. Routes of
8-12 deliveries exist in all parts of the city, and each route begins
at the Meals on Wheels kitchen at 200 S. Walnut. Volunteers use their
own vehicles, pick up their meals in an agency-provided thermal carrier
and then deliver them.
Volunteers do much more than just deliver meals: they
provide security and a moment of companionship for many homebound people
who otherwise might not see another human being all day.
Who are Meals on Wheels volunteers?
Drivers come from all walks of life: they are retirees, high school students,
business people, stay-at-home parents, couples, members of church groups,
civic groups and corporations. They all share a common desire to contribute
to the community and to help make the lives of older people easier.
How much time does it take?
It takes around one hour to deliver a route. You can deliver daily, weekly,
monthly or ask to be a substitute driver to be called on when needed.
What qualifications must I have?
You must meet the following qualifications:
- Have a valid Kansas driver’s license.
- Sign a criminal background affidavit.
- Sign a memorandum of understanding regarding agency
policies.
- Use a personal vehicle.
How do I apply?
Call the Meals on Wheels Volunteer Coordinators at 267-0122.
Neighborhood Connection Volunteers
What do Neighborhood Connection volunteers do?
They perform many tasks that allow older people to stay in their homes.
These may include doing minor home repairs, mowing yards, light housekeeping,
companion tasks like reading newspapers or writing letters, or simply
telephoning regularly to reassure a senior that someone cares. Volunteers
serve according to their interests and abilities. They do not give baths,
administer medicine, do major home repairs like electrical or plumbing
work, and do not do major housecleaning.
How do I apply?
Call the Neighborhood Connection Coordinator at 267-0122 or stop by Senior
Services, Inc. at 200 S. Walnut. Fill out an application and provide two
references. The coordinator will check references, orient you to the program,
and then match you with a senior in need of your help.
Neighborhood Connection is a great program for schools,
churches, youth groups, businesses, or any other organization seeking
to perform community service.
